Five career tips for equine students

Good Employment Week took place in November, and we celebrated what good employment means to our industry and shared plenty of helpful guidance for both employers and employees.
Now, the team at Myerscough College have shared their top tips, offering useful advice for students preparing for a career in the equestrian industry. From hands-on experience to building vital connections, these insights are designed to help students discover how to turn your passion for horses into a fulfilling career.
1. Gain practical work experience
- Spend time at equestrian centres, racing stables or stud farms to build practical, hands-on skills.
- Myerscough Equine students complete internal work experience to develop their skills with the support of tutors before heading out into the industry for external work experience.
- Volunteering at local riding schools, events or competitions also strengthens your CV and can help you grow in confidence.

- An industry mentor is a professional working within the equine industry who can share career advice and guidance.
- Mentors provide insider knowledge on how to transition from college courses into industry roles.
- Building these relationships can lead to internships, job opportunities and long-term support.
4. Develop transferable skills
- Employers value communication, teamwork and leadership as much as technical horse-care skills.
- Take part in student societies, competitions or leadership roles to demonstrate initiative.
5. Get involved in the wider equestrian community
- Attend events, conferences and seminars to stay updated on industry trends. Here are a few to check out:
- Beta International - Attend BETA International to source the latest products, network with industry leaders, and develop your knowledge on the trends affecting the equine and country sectors.
- The National Equine Show - Network with brands, and listen to educational and insightful topics being discussed on the live stages.
- National Equine Forum - Influential members of the equine industry, experts and government join together to debate pertinent topical issues and discuss current research and innovation.
- World Horse Welfare Conference - Held annually in person an online, these conference bring important and relevant discussions into the spotlight.
- International Society of Equitation Science Conference - This worldwide conference brings together researchers, practitioners and equine professionals to share the latest insights into equitation science and welfare.
