Horseback Archery

Horseback archery is an exhilarating sport that combines a relationship of ultimate trust between horse and rider with skills of precision and focus.

Originating from battlefield tactics used by warriors across the globe, it's evolved into a dynamic and accessible equestrian discipline, where rider and horse work as a partnership to shoot arrows at targets whilst galloping (or walking and trotting!) along a set track.

One of the most exciting aspects of horseback archery is that anyone can get involved, and so can any horse! Whether you’re a seasoned equestrian or completely new to the sport, you can start your journey in a way that suits you. You might train with your own horse, building trust and confidence as you go, or you might begin with a specially trained horse who can support you while you focus on learning the fundamentals of archery from the saddle.

Looking to get involved?

As the recognised national governing body for the sport, the British Horseback Archery Association (BHAA) provides a welcoming pathway into the sport through certified training, friendly competitions, and a growing community of passionate participants. The BHAA is dedicated to promoting participation and supporting rider development, whilst ensuring high standards across all levels.

Whether you're looking for a thrilling new challenge, a way to deepen your connection with horses, or a fresh take on traditional archery, horseback archery offers something unique and rewarding.
