The Charter for the Horse
Launched in March 2024, the Charter for the Horse is a pledge adopted across the equestrian sector to underpin our commitment to safeguarding the mental and physical wellbeing of our equids.
The Charter is built around six core areas:
- Empathy: Understanding horses as intelligent and emotional beings.
- Care: Prioritizing the health and wellbeing of horses throughout their lives.
- Respect: Treating each horse as an individual with specific needs.
- Consideration: Ensuring that competitive or commercial pressures do not compromise welfare.
- Ethics: Adhering to high standards of equine welfare and safety in all interactions.
- Learning: Continuously improving knowledge and practices based on informed advice and education.
All 19 of the British Equestrian member bodies keenly signed up to the Charter.
The Charter encourages all equestrians to pledge their commitment to these principles, fostering a culture of compassion and responsibility within the equestrian community. It aims to create positive experiences for horses by addressing their social, behavioral, nutritional and physical needs, ultimately enhancing their quality of life.
