Emile first started riding when he was 15 after pestering his parents for riding lessons for his birthday. As a young pupil, he spent time working at the Talland School of Equitation before moving Germany, where he worked for Performance Sales International, preparing young horses for auction.
In 1993, Emile won his first senior medals – team silver and individual bronze – at the European Championships in Lipica, Slovakia with Virtu, a horse with whome he had been crowned British National Champion.
His next team horse was Legrini, who he trained from the age of four up to international Grand Prix level, and they were selected for the 1997 and 2001 Europeans as well as the 1998 World Equestrian Games.
At the European Championships at Hickstead in 2003, he won a bronze medal with Rascher Hopes – the same horse he took to the Olympic Games in 2000. After a five-year gap, Emile was back in British Championship teams for the 2017 Europeans, where the team finished fourth.
Emile partnered Dono Di Maggio at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon in 2018, where they contributed to a team bronze.
