British Equestrian honours Badminton Horse Trials stalwarts

Sunday, 11 May 2025

British Equestrian has today honoured two leading equestrian figures in the eventing community for their services to the industry. During the final day of competition at the MARS Badminton Horse Trials, the federation’s Chair, Fields Wicker-Miurin OBE FKC presented the British Equestrian Medal of Honour to Nicky Salmon and Jane Tuckwell.

The British Equestrian Medal of Honour is awarded to those recognised as having completed acts of international endeavour in relation to equestrian sport, and for outstanding services to the federation or our member bodies.

In a multitude of roles, Nicky Salmon has been an exceptionally dedicated supporter of eventing for over 40 years. As a British Eventing Steward for four decades, she is a familiar face to riders, organisers and officials on the national circuit but her prowess in this role has taken her to European and World Championships under the FEI, as well as being steward at Badminton for a number of years.

She’s been on the organising team for a number of popular fixtures past and present and currently is on the British Eventing Sport Committee. With husband Robin, Nicky owned a number of top flight horses for a number of riders which led her to being pivotal in the formation of the Event Horse Owners Association, going on to serve on their board for many years.

Badminton has been part of Jane Tuckwell’s life for over 50 years. From early beginnings as a Pony Club runner in 1974, Jane took on the role of event secretary in 1985 under Lt. Colonel Frank Weldon and in 2006, the then Event Director Hugh Thomas appointed Jane as his Assistant Director. When Hugh retired in 2019, there was no one more qualified and knowledgeable than Jane to take on the challenge of running one of the world’s premier equestrian fixtures.

Jane’s exceptional eye for detail, ability to deal with a multitude of tasks and extreme organisational skills ensure the MARS Badminton Horse Trials remains the jewel in the crown of eventing for riders and their horses, owners and support crew, some 800 officials and volunteers, the sponsors and partners and of course, the thousands of fans and spectators who come back year after year.
