Ruth started her career as a Nutrition Chemist for the then-UK Government Agricultural Development & Advisory Service (ADAS). From there, she moved to a career in the equine nutrition industry, where she worked for some of the major brands in the industry in commercial nutrition roles and as a consultant, most notably to the World Class Performance programme.
She is the author of The Horse Nutrition Bible, wrote the Dr Ruth Nutrition column in Horse & Hound for several years, and has authored chapter in key reference texts for the equine nutrition industry.
Ruth also works at industry level, chairing the BETA Feed Committee on matters that affect the equine feed industry as a whole, including overseeing key industry codes of practice, most notably the BETA NOPS Code for the management of prohibited substances in feed, the BETA Assurance mark for equines prone to gastric ulcers and BETA ENFAR, a newly published register of equine nutritionists and feed advisers.
Ruth lives with her husband Ewan near Banbury and spends her non-working time trying to keep a few sheep alive and her three young adult children generally out of trouble.
