British Equestrian activates year two Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan to advance a more inclusive community

Friday, 20 June 2025

British Equestrian has today launched year two of our Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) which outlines objectives, actions and success measures for the next twelve months.  This ‘road map’ is vital as we and our 20 member bodies continue a long-term commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable equestrian community.

The year two action plan outlines a series of tangible short-term actions, spanning April 2025 to March 2026, aimed at embedding equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) throughout every element of our sector. It builds on the foundations laid in year one, guided by the federation’s wider Horses For All Strategy, launched in November 2023 and progress across the federation to date.

At the heart of the strategy is a mission to make inclusion an everyday reality at every level, in everything we do, giving every individual the opportunity to thrive, regardless of background with a clear vision of:

"An equestrian community which is truly representative of society, where everyone feels valued, safe and a strong sense of belonging."

British Equestrian Chief Executive, Jim Eyre said, “We are extremely proud of the progress made over the past year and this has motivated us to continue to drive our work forward. This year two plan deepens our commitment to systemic change by setting out clear, measurable steps we are taking to ensure inclusion becomes part of our everyday thinking and practice.

“This plan is about turning words in a strategy into tangible actions and results – it’s about creating structures and environments where everyone can access and feel they belong in equestrian sport. We are pleased to continue working alongside our member bodies and community to bring this to life,” he continued.

Key highlights of the year two DIAP include:

  • Leadership and governance: A new rulebook for everyone in the equestrian industry which includes an updated anti-discrimination policy, as well as inclusive training for staff and Board members across the federation.
  • Data and diversity indicators: Improved data collection processes across the federation and impact tracking of our actions.
  • Workforce: Embedding inclusive recruitment practices and fostering collaborative and inclusive cultures across the federation.
  • Partnership and collaboration: Strengthening engagement with community-based groups and facilitating federation-wide knowledge sharing.
  • Education and accountability: Launching new diversity and inclusion learning materials and lived-experience storytelling to build awareness.
  • Communication and engagement: Creating more inclusive, representative content and acting on insights from an inclusive communications audit.

The plan also aligns with the broader British Equestrian strategy 2025-2030, in which, supporting sustainable growth at all levels, ensuring a thriving, accessible, diverse and inclusive sport is a key priority, with EDI being a golden thread which weaves through every consideration, decision and action we take.

“We’re committed to continually reviewing, developing and taking meaningful action,” added Mandana Mehran-Pour, Head of Participation and Development at British Equestrian. “Thank you to everyone who has supported the development of the DIAP and helped implement actions across the federation, particularly the EDI Working Group.

“Our year two DIAP reflects a shared commitment across the sector and is setting the foundation for equity and inclusion to support a thriving, vibrant equestrian community. I encourage everyone who cares about the future of our sport to read the full plan and join us on this journey.”

We welcome feedback on the DIAP from equestrian partners, your insights will help us continuously refine our approach. For questions or comments, please email participation@bef.co.uk.
