Rider Profile

Name:
Jessica Phillips
Location:
Middlesex
Competition Grade:
2

I started riding in Devon when I was seven. I moved back to Ruislip in 2012 with my Mum, Dad and twin sister, and was extremely lucky to be given the opportunity to ride at South Bucks RDA. My first coach was Clive Milkins and the first horse I rode was Forrester – this combination helped me win my first RDA National Championship at the age of 10. I'm still at South Bucks and am now coached by Helen Burt. Helen has helped me to progress to para dressage qualifiers and competitions, which I am really enjoying.  South Bucks has given me so many opportunities, and I am very grateful to Di Redfern and the amazing facilities, grooms and volunteers.

I have dyskinetic and choreoathetoid cerebral palsy due to a brain injury at birth, and I also have dystonia. This causes me to have constant involuntary and very inconvenient movements in my body, especially my arms, which is worse under pressure. It also affects my balance.

I love dressage and enjoy competing. Riding is a brilliant sport for people with cerebal palsy – it's great exercise and gives me Independence, which is high on my list of priorities. I also enjoy swimming and going to the gym.
